Recruitment Opens for an Unprecedented Children’s Health Study
McLean, VA September 14, 2021 — A new health study seeking solutions to devastating and common childhood conditions is looking for a group of children to participate. This will be the first of its kind study to ask the question: is it possible to fully reverse chronic health conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, type II diabetes, mood disorders, ADHD and some forms of autism? Called the FLIGHT™ study, it is the second study in the Documenting Hope Research Program developed by Epidemic Answers.
Organizers of the FLIGHT™ Study are currently seeking a group of children between the ages of 2 and 15 in Northern Virginia with specific diagnoses. Families interested in participating must have a child with one of the following diagnoses:
- Severe asthma
- Severe allergies/severe eczema
- Autoimmune Condition
- ADHD
- Mood Disorder (such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, etc.)
- Type II diabetes/obesity
- Autism
- Other select chronic health condition
The study tests the hypothesis that comprehensive, lifestyle and personalized interventions can improve health and even fully reverse conditions once believed to be lifelong. Many chronic childhood conditions develop over time from the accumulation of environmental and lifestyle stressors on the body, as recent research has shown.
The FLIGHT™ Study will be led by Principal Investigator, Martha Herbert PhD, MD. Dr. Herbert is a pediatric neurologist, neuroscientist, and writer who trained in medicine at Columbia University, Pediatrics at Cornell-New York Hospital and Neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, where she founded the collaborative multidisciplinary TRANSCEND Research Program which takes a whole-body-brain approach to challenged brain development. She is the author of the book The Autism Revolution: Whole Body Strategies for Making Life All It Can Be and of numerous scientific papers.
The FLIGHT™ study will offer participating families an unprecedented level of support. Each participant will be provided with:
- A team of nationally recognized and local health experts focused on finding “root cause” solutions to the child’s health condition(s)
- State-of-the-art laboratory and other personalized diagnostic evaluations
- Provisions to help the family live a healthier lifestyle including nutritious food, safe home products, and a dedicated health coach.
Participating families will be screened for their willingness to make comprehensive lifestyle changes and have their daily life documented for a period of eighteen months.
The FLIGHT™ Study model draws upon decades of successes seen in clinics across the country by integrative physicians, other innovative providers and families whose children have gotten substantially better or even fully reversed their chronic health condition(s). The study aims to explore how these successes occur so that more children can experience the same results.
“The idea that people can recover from supposedly incurable conditions, if true, has enormous scientific implications,” says Dr. Herbert. “While there are many anecdotal cases of disease reversal, little structured analysis has been done to date.” The FLIGHT™ Study is a rigorous multi-year initiative to explore these anecdotes in a structured and methodical way.
While only a small number of families will have the opportunity to participate in this study, FLIGHT™ has the potential to transform the way we view and treat chronic conditions in children.
“The time is now for the scientific community to take recovery, environment and nutrition seriously—our future depends on it,” concludes Dr. Herbert.
