Carnitine
Carnitine is an amino-acid derivative made from lysine and methionine. It is often given to children with neurodevelopmental disorders and mitochondrial dysfunction because of its critical role in transporting long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria to be used as fuel. It is typically known as L-carnitine as well as levocarnitine. The root “carne” refers to the fact that carnitine is found in high concentrations in meat, fish and poultry.
