Eat Well Supplement Well Digest Well: A Nonconformist Approach To Optimal Health

By Dan Corrigan with Karen Myers, NTP
This book is an excellent foundation for those wanting a detailed, no-nonsense and easy-to-digest guide for health that's not based on fad diets. Using the principles of Dr. Weston A. Price and calling upon his own and others' healing successes in using these principles, Dan explains how to Eat Well, Supplement Well, Digest Well. We recommend this book as a solid basis for those wishing to heal from a chronic health condition and also for biohackers who want to optimize their health.

Eat Well, Supplement Well, Digest Well is written from the perspective of Dan Corrigan, cofounder and CEO of Organic 3, Inc., a supplement manufacturer. Dan healed himself from gastroinestinal disorders, depression, blood-sugar dysregulation, food sensitivities and chronic pain by following gut-healing diets, detoxifying, getting acupuncture treatments and taking supplements such as magnesium. He learned six key things about wellness:

  1. You are responsible for your health
  2. Listen to and understand your body
  3. Explore every option
  4. Do your research
  5. Understand the power of food
  6. Avoid most vitamin supplements

The book is divided into three sections, as you might expect: eat well, supplement well and digest well.

Eat Well

To eat well is to feed yourself and your family nutritiously, with clean, healthy food, Clean food has minimal chemicals and additives and maximal naturally occuring vitamins and minerals.

Dan Corrigan

Author, Co-Founder and CEO, Organic 3

In this part of the book, Dan helps to solve the question: What is the best human diet? His answer is that a diet should not include ultra-processed foods such as sugar, white flour, vegetable oils, preservatives and chemical flavorings (the Standard American Diet). In essence, it is the diet that Dr. Weston A. Price outlined in his study of healthy native peoples. These diets are high in fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins D and K) and minerals.

Eating well also includes animal-sourced proteins. Not only are these complete proteins, but they also include nutrients that are either not found otherwise in plants or found in very low levels in plants such as vitamin B12, vitamins A and D, and certain omega-3 fatty acids such as DHA and EPA. In addition to these fats, Dan also describes the benefits of cholesterol and saturated fats, which have been falsely demonized since the 1960s, and the harms of trans fats and vegetable oils.

In addition, to eat well means to eat organic foods that are cooked from scratch at home. It also means to drink clean water and to stay hydrated and to avoid dehydrating liquids and sugary drinks.

Supplement Well

This part of the book is interesting, given that Dan co-founded a supplement company. He explains that the supplement industry is “fraught with misinformation and inflated promises.” He also reveals practices that are not talked about by most supplement companies. Some of the fraud that he has observed are stolen product descriptions and “whole-food” products that contain artificial ingredients (and how to spot the frauds). He explains how many supplements contain synthetic forms of vitamins and minerals, rather than those from whole foods.

His forte’ is explaining what to look for when buying vitamin C, magneisum and cod liver oil supplements. In addition, he teaches readers how whole foods such as beef liver are much better sources of certain vitamins and minerals than any supplement could ever be.

Digest Well

From our perspective, health-conscious people often lean into dietary changes and supplements but neglect to address digestion for proper absorption of food and supplements. In this section of the book, Dan offers symptoms of what could be problematic digestion as well as advice about probiotic foods and supplements. After all, Dan is the man who developed the GutPro probiotic for children with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

This section completes the digestion discussion with information about who might benefit from taking hydrochloric (HCl) supplements and digestive enzymes.

In Conclusion

Dan wrote this book in a visually accessible way that make it fun and interesting to read with plenty of fun graphic callouts. Each chapter has a few easy-to-follow action steps that just about everyone can do to improve their health. This book makes a great gift to those who are confused by the ever-changing guidance in mainstream media as well as for those whose doctors have not been trained in nutrition.
