In This Webinar
Because Vicki works with many children with autism, ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disorders, her passion is educating potential mothers about preparing their bodies for conception so that their children don’t end up as another statistic in the growing epidemic of chidren’s chronic diseases and disorders.
Over 54% of American children have some form of chronic illness, whether it’s autism, ADHD, allergies, asthma, autoimmune disorders, mood disorders, diabetes or obesity. When that many kids are sick, it’s time to take a look at helping potential mothers understand that their toxicity, gut dysbiosis, nutritional deficiencies and stress responses can get passed onto their children.
Key Discussions
These following themes collectively highlight the multipronged approach needed for effective preconception and prenatal care. The information in this webinar emphasized nutrition, gut health, toxin avoidance, lifestyle changes, and the interplay of genetics and environment.
The Importance of Nutrient Intake During Preconception and Pregnancy
Optimal nutrient intake through both diet and high-quality supplements is crucial for healthy fetal development. Essential nutrients such as folate, vitamin D, iodine, and omega-3 fatty acids support various functions including brain development, immune health, and bone health. Folate should preferably come from dietary sources such as dark leafy greens, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Please note that folate is not the same thing as its synthetic version – folic acid, which is harmful to those with an MTHFR genetic mutation.
Gut Health and Its Impact on Overall Health
Maintaining good gut health is fundamental to prevent chronic immune conditions, eczema, autoimmune diseases, and promoting cognitive and immune function. Strategies such as incorporating probiotics, eating fermented foods, and avoiding antibiotics when possible are critical elements of fostering a healthy microbiome.
Detoxification and Avoiding Environmental Toxins
Detoxification before conception and the reduction of environmental toxin exposure during pregnancy is essential to minimize risks to fetal development. Recommendations include using non-toxic household cleaners, avoiding processed foods, and minimizing exposure to heavy metals and endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
Impact of Diet and Lifestyle on Pregnancy and Disease Prevention
A nutrient-dense diet rich in healthy fats, proteins, and fiber-rich carbohydrates supports optimal pregnancy outcomes and decreases the risk of chronic diseases in children. Lifestyle choices, including managing stress and avoiding inflammatory foods like processed sugars and trans fats, significantly influence both maternal and child health.
Role of Genetics and Epigenetics in Health
While genetics account for a limited percentage of diseases and disorders, diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors (epigenetics) play a significant role. This emphasizes the control individuals have over their health through conscious and informed choices, especially during preconception and prenatal periods.
