Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil packs have been used throughout the ages to help with tummy aches, constipation and other health conditions. This antique oil had many versatile and effective uses throughout its history in ancient Egyptian, Ayurvedic and Mediterranean cultures as well as in modern times. What is the secret about this traditional medicinal oil with its many benefits and healing abilities, and how has it managed to triumph over centuries of cultures throughout the ages?

Potential Health Benefits of Castor Oil Packs

There are many healthcare benefits that have been attributed to castor oil throughout the ages due to its unique properties. Here are a few:

  • Aids in wound healing
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Reduces symptoms of endometriosis
  • Potentially reduces uterine fibroids
  • Potentially reduces ovarian cysts
  • Improves complexion
  • Supports relaxation
  • Calms nervous stress
  • Can reduce pain from swollen joints

Castor Oil Packs

One of the best ways to effectively benefit from castor oil is using a castor oil pack. These are simple homemade packs created with a small piece of wool flannel cloth saturated with high-quality, cold-pressed castor oil that is warmed and applied to the abdomen and covered with plastic and a hot water bottle placed on top to drive the castor oil deeper into the tissues. There needs to be enough castor oil, but not overly saturated. Take caution to wear clothes that are appropriate because the oil can stain.

The hot oil will begin to relax the body, the mind and the nervous system. It’s best to remain up to an hour with the castor oil pack on the abdomen to increase the effectiveness and its benefits. Sometimes thoughts, feelings, or memories may surface during the healing process, giving the person an opportunity to release any blockages and/or issues that may arise to create a healthier flow of energy.

Children with tummy aches and constipation often benefit from the use of castor oil packs. Because the oil can help with blood circulation, it can also gently help with the removal of toxins through and out the body. Castor oil packs are a time-honored tradition that are an easy and inexpensive tool in a family’s healing toolkit.

What to Expect from a Castor Oil Pack

There is no doubt the warmth and comfort of castor oil packs can provide great relaxation and a sense of calmness especially after a stressful day. When the castor oil pack is applied to the abdomen there could be a reduction in bloating, improved bowel movements, less gas or acid reflux and better digestion. In the case of skin improvement, a clearer, cleaner, more vibrant complexion can occur with usage over time due to the enhanced hydration and detoxification properties of castor oil. For those who suffer from aches and pains there may be relief from muscle aches, joint pain and inflammation, making a person feel better. In the case of cleansing and detoxifying toxins from the body, there might be an increase in urination or bowel movements as the body tries to eliminate unwanted wastes and toxins.

Too Much Castor Oil?

Castor oil can become a problem especially if ingested orally over a long period of time. Always use with caution when taking orally. Never use on broken skin or if one has skin sensitivity to castor oil. It is not advisable to take castor oil orally during pregnancy because it can stimulate birth contractions. Lastly, castor oil is very thick, so starting slowly is advisable, as it is very potent and the body needs time to acclimate.

The History of Castor Oil

One wonders how the highly toxic castor oil plant (Ricinus communis) managed to survive over time, even though its reputation has not always been the best. The first recorded medical use of castor oil was around 3,500 years ago, and different cultures throughout the ages used castor oil for its healing properties. Indeed, many biblical stories expressed some healing and religious connotations of the castor plant.

The castor oil plant produces seeds containing castor oil and a highly toxic substance called ricin. Ricin can trigger cytotoxicity that can cause cell damage, cell dysfunction or even cell death (apoptosis). However, only the seed of a castor oil plant is toxic, not the oil that comes from it.

In ancient Rome, castor oil was seen as a healing oil known as “Palma di Cristo”, literally meaning in Italian “the hand of Christ”. It was highly sought after due to its profound healing properties. Roman soldiers and many physicians popularized the use of castor oil due to its ability to treat a wide variety of illnesses and internal health ailments. They treated skin infections, joint pain, ear ailments and digestive disorders as well as topically applying castor oil to inflammation, burns and wounds. The Romans, like the Egyptians, utilized a method of heat extraction to purify the oil and make it safe for consumption and transdermal application.

Modern Science Confirms Healing Properties of Castor Oil

Castor oil has finally found scientific acceptance beyond the recognition of its historical usages and religious implications. Today’s scientists agree that this ancient oil is much more credible than initially assumed; see Sources & References below. They attribute its positive healing effects to its active ingredient, ricinoleic acid.

Ricinoleic acid is a unique fatty acid that comprises over 90% of castor oil and binds to two receptors – one in the intestines and the other in the uterus (for females). This acid activates EP3 receptors that are involved in smooth-muscle contractions. This explains the many exceptional uses of castor oil such as stimulating bowel movements and uterine contractions, which enhance motility and accelerate birthing contractions, respectively.

The remaining 10% of the oil is a mixture of other more-common types of fatty acids such as vitamin E, omega 6, and omega 9. The combination of these fatty acids along with the powerful ricinoleic acid is the perfect mixture for an amazingly thick and moisturizing oil for healing as well as beauty enhancement.

A Unique Solution

The extent of sacred healing properties associated with castor oil is why this highly valued oil remains part of our tradition today. It is considered a gift from nature in many of the indigenous traditional practices across the globe in Africa, Asia and the Americas to connect with ancestors, spirit and community. Sometimes the greatest simplicity can be the least expensive solution to health issues. Castor oil is a unique solution because of the great diversity in addressing many types of health issues without high costs or great difficulty. The profound healing power of this traditional healing oil rich in history has literally survived centuries in time throughout various cultures worldwide, attesting to its longstanding ability to heal.
